"If you change the way you view birth, the way you birth will change.' - Marie Mongan
What is HypnoBirthing®?
With an extensive program of deep relaxation, self-hypnosis and information, HypnoBirthing® allowes woman to give birth in a way that enables her to address her natural birthing instincts and to birth her child safely and easily.
If a mother is well prepared at a physically, mentally and spiritually level, she can bring her child into the world in a calmer and more confident way, without fear, wherever and however she likes. The birth companion also has a big role during the birth. In the course you learn great teamwork and you get the tools to create a beautiful birthing experience together.
HypnoBirthing® is not only a delivery technique but also a philosophy. This philosophy is partly based on the book ' Childbirth without fear.' from Dr. Grantly Dick-Read. With HypnoBirthing® you learn that if anxiety and tension and medical complications no longer become part of the birth process, pain does not have to be part of a birth at all.
“It is not only that we want to bring about an easy labor, without risking injury to the mother or the child; we must go further. We must understand that childbirth is fundamentally a spiritual, as well as a physical, achievement. . . The birth of a child is the ultimate perfection of human love.” – Dr. Grantly Dick-Read
What do you learn?
HypnoBirthing – The Mongan Method classes are designed to be taught as five two-and-a-half hour classes for the birthing mother and her companion.
Breathing and relaxation techniques to make your birth as natural and comfortable as possible. You learn different breathing techniques for different phases during the birth process. With this deep breathing you breathe the baby downward in a relaxed state instead of pushing actively and exhaustively. Ofcourse you also learn why this is so important. You get different techniques for deep relaxation, a lot of information about the functioning of the birth muscles, how you can optimally use your body. The mother also has less chance of hyperventilation due to superficial breathing.
You learn to break through the anxiety-tension-pain syndrome before, during and after the birth.
During the course you learn how your thoughts, environment and (subconscious) fears are connected to how the body does its work. A tense mind means tense (uterus) muscles and less oxygen-rich blood. With the right relaxation and confidence you can feel how your body actually knows naturally what to do.
It shortens the opening phase of the uterus by a few hours and allows the mother to follow the natural impulses of her body
A healthy, relaxed body ensures that the body can do its job well. This way you can easily follow the natural impulses of the body and breathe the baby down until the head is visible instead of actively pushing and forcing it down. This also reduces the risk of damage to the pelvic floor
Knowledge of the physiology of birth and muscles of the uterus
Your responsibility and choices for the birth of your baby, signposting you to the latest evidence based data,. How to prepare for the birth you want.
How to recognise the stages of labour, and useful things to do in each,
Massage techniques to produce endorphins (the love hormone)
Together with your partner you learn how to stimulate endorphins in your body. These are natural painkillers (stronger than morphine!) So you can experience less pain and makes the birth process go easier.
In many cases, it reduces and eliminates the need for chemical anesthesia, interventions, episodemy and other procedures.
In the course you will learn why it is so important for the birth process that there is as little medical intervention as possible if there is no real need for it. Couples who are well prepared with the right information and relaxation need these interventions less but also choose less for this themselves. Less intervention means more time for bonding and promoting natural hormones.
It helps you to be calm and in control, no matter what happens around you.
During the course you will receive many tools that can help you get a good experience in every situation. HypnoBirthing can also be used in case of a possible induction or caesarean section etc.
The Birth companion is part of the birth.
The course is especially for pregnant women with their birth companion. He or she will learn to advocate on your behalf and create a calm and loving athmosphere. It is very nice for the mother to have a familiar voice and touch to promote relaxation.
The special breathing almost completely eliminates postnatal discomfort.
During the course you will learn various relaxation exercises, visualisations, massages and tools to make you as relaxed and stress-free as possible. These tools can be used for every situation in your life. Especially in the postnatal period.
Important and beautiful information about the post-partum period.
HypnoBirthing gives you a gentle start into parenthood and also contains a lot of beautiful information for after the baby is born.

Why attend a birthing course?
Parents who want a nice, calm birth for themselves and their child have the responsibility to find out exactly what this means for them and to determine how they can translate their wishes into pleasant birth preferences. Gaining knowledge, exploring and research ensures good communication between the parents and the caregiver. It is also important to take responsibility for your own body and that of your child. From an early age many women hear from their environment (think of films, for example or a friend/family member) how awful a birth is and what can go wrong. This extreme fear causes their bodies to become tense, and that tension prohibits their bodies from easily performing a normal physiological function. The result is exactly what they feared most–long, painful birthing or unnecessary intervention. Our thoughts about birth are influenced by this on a conscious and unconscious level and that is why it is so important to prepare well with positive information about how a very normal birth should be like - a nice, soft birth for you and your baby.
Fortunately, today's women in The Netherlands have many choices regarding their birth. The birth system is made for a standard Homebirth but you can choose for birthing in a Birthcentre or Hospital too. No matter where you birth or how, there is always a good competent midwife and nurse near you to help. This is what makes the system in the Netherlands so unique. Pregnant woman also have every opportunity to investigate those choices, in which the first most important choice is the selection of a good birth preparation that helps them research, explore and find the right people and environment that they feel is 'right'. The HypnoBirthing philosophy and the course program gives women the chance to explore their choices, and thereby come a step closer to the birth that is desired. Especially in the present time where everything seems and need to go as fast as possible, it is nice to find that moment of peace and to focus on the new life that grows inside you. Birth is an experience that you take with you for the rest of your life.
We know you have many choices and many decisions to make for your birthing experience. You have choices in selecting your care provider; you have choices in selecting the environment in which you will bring your baby into the world. Another important choice is that of the childbirth education classes you will choose to prepare for the birth of your baby. We know you will be happy with your choice of HypnoBirthing®.
